FROM KENYA TO EUROPE

Biocado: A Journey from Farm to Fork

  • Harvesting of Kenyan Hass and Fuerte avocados begins in March in central parts of Kenya. Avocados are harvested by hand; pickers work from the ground, use ladders, or remove the fruit using a pole equipped with a pull-cord operated terminal blade and fruit catching bag.

  • Local Transport: From the plantations, the avocados are transported by truck to warehouses near Nairobi where they are weighed, washed, sorted by grade and size.

  • To prepare them for the long journey to Europe, they are cooled to approximately 4-8°C in cooling chambers; this prevents them from ripening too early.

  • International shipping: As an organic avocado exporter, our prices are negotiated with European importers before the avocados leave the port of Mombasa in Kenya. During the sea crossing, which takes about three to four weeks, avocados are stored in refrigerated container in a controlled atmosphere which ensures their freshness for a longer period of time.

  • Arrival in Europe: Most Kenyan avocados sold in Europe arrive first in Rotterdam, Netherlands, where they are ripened using special chambers, here they are kept for 7-14 days at a temperature between 16-20°C.

  • After the ripening process, the avocados are ready to be transported by refrigerated trucks throughout Europe, where they are sold as “ready to eat” avocados in supermarkets.

  • Biocado ensures full transparency in the supply chain of our avocados fruits right from its harvesting to transport of avocados from Kenya, through the ripening process in Europe ensuring the avocados you buy in supermarket carry the tradition and philosophy of our Kenyan farms and farmers on your plate: From Farm to Fork.
